When you enter the truck driving industry, it is important to know what types of trucking jobs are available. People may think that there is only one option when it comes to truck driving, but there are actually several based on how independent you want to be, your schedule, etc. Here are some of the different types of truck driving jobs.
The most common of all truck driving jobs, this one consists of driving for a specific company. Company drivers often get benefits, consistent pay, and consistent time at home. They are generally given a company truck to drive for the duration of their employment and don’t have to worry about the costs of fuel, tolls, truck maintenance, etc.
Lease Purchase Jobs
This type of job is for those who have interest in becoming an owner operator but don’t have the means to purchase their own truck yet. Instead, trucking companies have lease programs where trucks can be rented for a fixed weekly price. The point of this program is to allow truck drivers to pay off the truck over time. Lease purchase drivers are typically paid more than company drivers but less than owner operators and are responsible for their own fuel and maintenance costs.
Owner Operator Jobs
Out of all the truck driving jobs, this is typically the one that is the most well paid. An owner operator has their own truck that they can either use for themselves or rent out to companies. There are two main types of owner operators. The first has their own tractor, but not their own trailer. They must transport freight for companies in order to get access to their trailers. The second type has their own tractor and trailer, giving them a lot more freedom. Owner operators are also responsible for the upkeep of their trucks.
