The Basic Checklist for Buying a Used Truck

Ask your friends in the trucking industry if they have any recommendations for a good seller.

Sometimes, the trucking business can be full of high stakes. And when you are looking to invest in a used freight truck, in a way, you’re staking your career on finding the right one. There are a lot of resources out there to help you find used trucks, but you will also need to do a lot of digging to make sure you don’t get a bad deal. Here is a basic checklist to help you start your search for a used truck.

Get a Trusted Opinion

As you know, going online can only tell you so much about a vehicle and a seller. It’s always a great idea to look for reviews of the seller to see if it’s worth your time to take a look. But even better than what anonymous strangers have to say online is the insight of people you know. Ask around among your coworkers or other friends in the trucking industry to see if they have any suggestions for a good seller. If your friend had past experience with a particular seller that they recommend, then it’s less likely that you could get ripped off.

What is the Backstory

When it comes to most big investments in life, knowing the past of a product is key. Ask your seller why they want to part with their freight truck? Are they retiring or upgrading? You want to make sure that you don’t buy a bad truck that somebody is trying to get rid of.

Inspecting the Truck

Most importantly, you will get all the best information from the truck itself with a thorough inspection. Start by looking at the surface of the truck. Does everything look clean and in decent condition? If the cab is dented and rusty on the outside, then that’s probably not good news for what’s going on under the hood. Then, of course, you should look at the engine. But don’t forget to check the tires as well, which can tell you a lot about the truck. If the tread is worn out, then the truck could be old, and if the tires are cracked, then it could be a sign of overloading.
