Can Freightliners be Hacked?

Think it’s easy for big trucks and freightliners to be hacked?

If you have recently come across any of the headlines about the University of Michigan researchers who managed to hack into the Ji939 Databus of a 2006-model-year truck, you might be wondering if it’s easy for other big trucks and freightliners to be hacked. This is not yet a common occurrence, and only a test carried out by academics, but could have potential future implications for the freightliner industry. To learn more about it, read on.

What The Researchers Were Trying To Accomplish

A YouTube video came along with several of the online reports about the hacking attempt which showed the vehicle lurching along a test track. The hacker is in the back seat while the researchers sit in the driver and passenger seat and comment on the performance of the hacked truck. The University of Michigan researchers were attempting to discover how likely it would be to manage a similar type of hack, or even a more complete disruption of vehicle controls, remotely using the telematics links that are starting to become a popular maintenance management option in trucking technology.

Why Is This Important?

Knowing the extent of the damage someone unsavory could do while hacked into a truck’s internal network is something that has been unexplored previously. No one really knows the full extent of what can be done when exploiting the openness of different trucks and freightliners. As all trucks and a high percentage of the diesel powered equipment in North America share this architecture, it is definitely something worth looking into.
