How to Stay Awake on a Long Road Trip

Driving long hours on the road can be very tiring, so here are some tips to help you stay awake on that next road trip!

Truck driving is a very rewarding career choice, but it does require long hours on the road. Being on the road for hours at a time can cause people to become bored and tired, which is dangerous because people need to be fully alert when driving. Here are some tips for staying awake on a long road trip.

Cat Naps

Before you get on the road, don’t hesitate to take a short nap. Even if you sleep for less than an hours time, naps still help your body get the energy it needs to stay awake for a longer period of time. While on the road, pull over and take short power naps when you start to feel tired. Don’t try to fight the fatigue because that could be potentially dangerous.

Healthy Eats

Stopping at a fast food place can be very tempting after some hours on the road, but try your best to refrain from the junk food. A healthy meal before the road trip will help to give your body the energy it needs. While on the road, eat healthy snacks that contain complex carbs and protein, which will give you energy. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats are all good, healthy options for snacking.

Move Around

Every couple of hours, pull your truck over to exercise your body. Sitting still for long periods of time can cause your body to get tired and doesn’t allow the blood to flow like it needs to. You can stop for a short stretch or pull into a rest stop and take a nice walk before heading back to finish your road trip.

Turn up the Music

If you are one that listens to music while you drive, it is a good idea to turn the volume up if you notice that you are starting to get tired. Music impacts your mood which can also impact your energy level. Turn on some up beat music and use that to keep you awake for a while.

Open Your Windows

Let the wind blow through your hair as you are driving down the road. This is especially helpful if it’s warm inside of your truck and cold outside. The cold air hitting up against you is sure to give you a temporary boost from that sleepy state.
