Safety Tips for Female Truckers

Female Trucker Driving A Semi-Truck

Being a female trucker in a male-dominated industry can be intimidating and challenging. It’s best to stay on the safe side and take extra precautions when staying at rest stops overnight.

Despite the common depiction of truckers being only men, there are a lot of female truckers in the trucking industry. In 1929, Lillie Drennan was the first woman to receive her CDL, and many women truck drivers have followed in her footsteps since. Of course, to stay safe on the road, there are many things to consider. But women think about staying safe off the road more than men do. Here are some tips for keeping yourself safe on long trips so that you can return home safely to your family and loved ones.

Safe Parking

It may cost you a few miles every week, but stopping early to find good parking will ensure that you are safer and more secure. Try to choose truck stops that are open 24/7 if possible so that you have access to food and showers. Park near the middle or front and close to lights whenever you can. If you drive for a big company try parking in your company’s terminals and next to other company trucks. It can be heartening to know that you are parked next to your co-workers.

Safety Inside the Truck

A good tip for female truckers who sleep inside their trucks is to lace the seatbelts through the door handle and fasten them. This gives you a little extra time to sound your horn should anyone ever try to break into your truck. Keep your truck supplied with an emergency kit, extra gallon jugs of water to stay hydrated, and paper towels or moist towelettes for easy cleanup. Snacks are also handy for keeping energy levels up while you’re on the road or for being a food source if your truck breaks down and it takes a few hours to get back on the road. Also make sure to pack good rain boots, snow boots, and hand warmers. The weather may be fine where you are now, but it’s best to be prepared for whatever lays on the road ahead.
