Are OEM Wiper Blades Better?

When it comes to truck parts, we can break all of them down into two categories: OEM and aftermarket. OEM is an acronym standing for ‘original equipment manufacturer.’ If you haven’t deduced this already, this means that these parts were manufactured in the same place as your vehicle’s original parts. There’s a pervasive notion that OEM is better than aftermarket parts. But are OEM wiper blades better? Here are our thoughts on the matter.

Are OEM wiper blades better? Here are our thoughts on the matter.

Guaranteed to Function

You’ve probably been there before. You noticed your wiper blades are on their last legs, but you figure you can get by safely for a little while longer. Then the rain starts falling, and you realize you need replacements, pronto. You’ll just run into a highwayside shop and grab some aftermarket blades. What could it hurt?

But after you’ve installed your blades, you start to notice some problems. These could include any of the following:

  • Smearing your windshield
  • ‘Hopping’ across the glass
  • ‘Squealing’ sound
  • Fussy installation
  • Wrong size

Even if you do a bit of research, it’s too easy to end up with some aftermarket blades that aren’t perfect for your vehicle. Investing in OEM wiper blades is a bit pricier, but they’re guaranteed to function perfectly.

Higher Quality?

Earlier, we mentioned the conception that OEM parts are, as a rule of thumb, higher quality than aftermarket parts. This is not always the case. As the consumer, you have to do your research to find the highest quality parts in your scenario.

Still, there is reason to believe that OEM wiper blades tend to be of a higher quality than the aftermarket alternatives. This isn’t always cut-and-dry. Still, think about how long your OEM blades lasted when you first got your truck. If you’d like your wiper blades to last that long again, OEM blades are guaranteed to do so.

By purchasing aftermarket blades without thorough research and a professional recommendation, you’re rolling the dice.

To Summarize

You can pick up aftermarket wiper blades just about anywhere. It’s hard to deny the convenience of being able to walk into any local Wal-Mart on your route and pick up a pair of cheap wiper blades that will basically get the job done.

But it’s also hard for us to fully recommend aftermarket wipers. Keep in mind what we have said about the longevity and functionality of OEM wiper blades. But ultimately, you have to make the best decision given your circumstances and resources.
