Western Star’s parent company, Daimler Trucks North America, has recently completed construction of its newest test facility, only 120 miles from its headquarters in Portland, Oregon. The move pinched the distance between its former testing facility in Indiana, and was spearheaded by the company’s newest CEO, Roger Nielson. Daimler invested a whopping $18.7 into what they’re calling the High Desert Proving Ground, and it can only mean a brighter future for all of its subsidiaries, including Baltimore Freightliner-Western Star.
Increased Connectivity
Since even the trucking industry is transitioning into the digital age, the benefits of moving the training facility closer to the headquarters of a company are undeniable. The previous distance put a strain on the relationship between each location’s engineers, stunting progress. Now, not only can engineers physically collaborate more easily, but they won’t have to spend days waiting to relocate test vehicles or try out new software developments, allowing for damage along the way. There are schools of thought that suggest truck drivers themselves aren’t fond of the latest technological developments, but they undoubtedly cut costs and increase efficiency.
The Simulated Test Track
One of the prime features of Daimler’s new fleet testing facility is its 3.5 miles of engineered bumpy ride. With 379 precast panel and 9 different concrete test events, it self-contains global road conditions for stream-lined testing of resistance and fuel economy. Not to mention, the road from the testing facility to the headquarters includes mountain terrain, desert, and highway driving, allowing for a greater level of diversity in testing than ever before.
