Healthy Living Tips All Truckers Can Benefit From

It takes a special kind of person to be a truck driver. You need character, toughness, and a healthy attitude towards life on the road. Trucking is tough, there’s no doubt about it. Working long hours alone on a different schedule than most other people has the potential to lead to some unhealthy habits. Did you know that nearly 9 out of 10 truckers have at least one risk factor (smoking addiction, obesity, hypertension, etc) for chronic disease? If you follow a few simple healthy living tips, you’ll improve your quality of life and live to see another day in the trucking business.

Healthy Living Tips for Truckers

If you follow a few simple healthy living tips, you’ll improve your quality of life and live to see another day in the trucking business.

Tips for Healthy Living on the Road

  • Eat smart!

As a trucker, your diet likely consists of fast food and late-night diner meals. However, eating these often greasy and unhealthy foods can make you drowsy and give you acid reflux and heartburn. Although it takes some extra effort, try packing your own meals in a cooler at least a few times a week and try swapping out the greasy snacks for healthy options, like fruits, veggies, and nuts.

  • Add in some exercise!

Truckers have one of the most sedentary jobs around. Without even the option to get up and take a stretch without parking your truck, your exercise options throughout the day are somewhat limited. Try some quick push-ups and sit-ups in the morning or go for a walk before you go to bed at night to add a little bit of movement into your day.

  • Quit smoking!

After you’ve spent a few hours out on the road, it can be easy to get a little bored. Many truckers use cigarettes to keep them occupied while driving – nearly 54% of them across the United States. Not only are you negatively affecting your health, smoking while driving is distracted driving and you’re more likely to get involved in an accident. Quitting smoking doesn’t happen overnight, but making a good effort is the first step to improving your health.
