What Truck Drivers Should Do During Tornados

Today, we’ll be letting you know what truck drivers should be doing during tornados.

While spring is a season known for its warm sunny days and occasional rain showers, the weather isn’t always pleasant during this time. Sometimes, the weather can get stormy, and one severe weather condition that needs to be considered is tornados. If you’re a truck driver, it’s always important to adapt to the weather, and tornados are definitely no exception. Today, we’ll be letting you know what truck drivers should be doing during tornados so that they can be safer under such severe circumstances.

Plan Ahead

Oftentimes, tornados can be detected before truck drivers have to get on the road. As such, you can plan accordingly so that you minimize the harm you have to encounter. You might end up not going on the road at all. If you do go on the road, have a road map planned out with many different truck stops and operating centers where you can seek shelter if necessary.

Find a Ditch if No Shelter is Available

In the scenario in which shelter isn’t available, look for a culvert, ravine, or ditch. Generally, it’s good to get low to the ground. Not only that, but you have to keep an eye on the ditch that you’ve chosen. Take note if your ditch is filling up with water, especially if there are nearby power lines that could potentially fall into the ditch later. You also want to observe if there’s any flying debris that can hit you. Under these types of circumstances, you may need to find another ditch in which to seek shelter.

Do NOT Find Shelter Under a Bridge or Overpass

While a bridge or overpass seems like a good place to seek shelter, don’t be fooled. They might put a roof over your head, but they also act like wind tunnels. In other words, wind can actually speed up while traveling under bridges and overpasses. This means that flying debris would be incredibly dangerous to you.
