3 Safety Tips for Highway Driving

Highway driving takes up the majority of a trucking route. It is important to take these safety precautions.

Most of your time behind the wheel of a truck will be spent on long highway drives. These three tips are designed to help you avoid accidents and common highway hazards.

1 Don’t Drive Distracted

Even with all the PSA commercials out there warning about texting while driving, everyone has checked their phone once or twice while at a red light or during slow traffic. It can be easy to feel like you have more control than you think. However, it only takes one second of inattention for an unexpected car or pedestrian to dart in front of your path. Especially when driving a commercial truck, you simply can’t afford to drive distracted. Put your phone far out of reach when driving and, remember, you can always pull over to answer a call.

2 Get Rested for the Road

It goes without saying that falling asleep while driving could cause a devastating accident. But did you know that even driving while tired can be comparable to drunk driving? Even an only moderately tired driver can get lulled by highway hypnosis, which is a sensation that occurs when staring at the same long, dull highway for too long. Get a good night’s sleep before you hit the road and, whenever possible, be sure to pull over and take a break. It’s better to be a little behind schedule because you stopped for a nap than to risk your life if you feel too tired to drive.

3 Watch out for Traffic

Traffic patterns on a highway can be frustratingly unpredictable. With cars constantly changing lanes and with sudden traffic jams, it’s especially important to stay attentive. In addition to cutting out distractions and getting rest, you can avoid accidents by planning ahead. Check your route for high-traffic areas, such as cities, and mentally prepare yourself so you can limit confusion on the road.
